Wow, what a week! The Creature Design workshop was fantastic. Five days straight from 8-6, nothing but drawing and sculpting. Could it get any better? Well, maybe if they’d played something other than Trans music or the Braveheart score, but not much.

The first two days were entirely drawing, redrawing, and re-redrawing, which was an unexpected, necessary, and welcomed surprise. They forced me to explore new ways to draw, new (old) mediums, and ways to think about my drawing. It’s refreshing to say the least. A lot of my work to come will be different from what I’m used. That makes me nervous since I liked where my art was going before the workshop. Nevertheless, it’s important for me to ride this inspiration and let out whatever wants to come out. The big difference (aside from drawing in pencil, not pen) is to draw like a sculptor. Thinking about form the whole time and as I draw, moving my arm like I would if I were sculpting. I’ve been letting a lot of that out lately through abstract shapes. All I wanna do is draw circles. Given the circumstances, I’m okay with that. (see what I did there?)

Sculpture. This was by far the most humbling part of the workshop. Never have I considered myself to be a master sculptor of any level, but now I see just how much there is to learn. There’s so much more that can be brought to sculpting than I’d realized. To illustrate that point, here’s an anecdote from the workshop: My sculpt was two days in, and I felt like I was getting ready to clean it up and start adding all the fun shit - tertiary details and such. Carlos gets around to me and starts addressing an area that I considered the furthest along talking about how forms need to be more defined and then flow together. When I asked him about finishing the sculpt he said, “You’re a long way from that, dude. This part of the process can take up to a month.” Dammit. It wasn’t really the point of the workshop to finish a sculpture, just to design a creature and have it blocked out, so I was good there. But if I ever want to take Horribull all the way, I got my work cut out.

The instruction was top-effing-notch. I could go on about it, but in short, Carlos had a plethora of design knowledge, technique, and experience to share. It wouldn’t have been complete without several rants about you name it. (I say that with love!) Andrew did an amazing job facilitating the workshop as well as helping with everyone’s anatomy - human, animal, and made up. He also had some brilliant things to say about life as an artist, and the industry. On the last day, we had a surprise visit from Damon Bard; dope.

Now that the way I’m looking at things have changed, I’ll be interested to see where my art goes. More sculpture will definitely be in the near future, and I’ve already been continuing to draw my fingers off. In fact, today I’m going to the art store to replace my pencil cause it’s almost at nub status. Jesus, never thought I’d say that.
